Why We Charge by the Hour (You’re Welcome)

When searching for a content writer or copywriter, you’ll find they’ll charge one of three ways — per word, per project, or per hour. While there are pros and cons for each, we’ve found charging per hour to be the most fair, accurate, and adaptable for our clients. Read on to see what we mean.

Whether you’re a multi-national corporation or a brand-new solopreneur, your copy and content needs vary from month to month, day to day, and even project to project.

So does your availability for (and interest in) prepping your collateral.

Let’s take a look at three archetypal clients requesting a blog post as an example:

Should all three of these clients be charged the same?

Should we independently scope — and rescope, and potentially rescope again — for each project and each project change?

Our hourly structure ensures:

  • Fair pricing, always. You’re charged for the time we spend. No more, no less.

  • The ultimate in flexibility. This month’s blog post could be a 2000-word deep dive into a dense topic. Next month is a fluffy, fun piece that’s a breeze and a blast to write. Your price varies accordingly.

  • Pressure-free prep. We know you have good intentions; you mean to gather lots of background and craft a kickass outline we can just carry across the finish line. But sometimes, life doesn’t go as planned. When that happens, we’ll instantly pick up the baton, wherever it may be — even if it’s still in the equipment room.

The most common concern we hear about our pricing structure is the fear of the unknown. We get it — you’re agreeing to pay a price that could fluctuate depending on the time it takes to research, write, and make edits. But here’s why you shouldn’t worry:

  • We’re experienced estimators. We put a lot of thought into our estimates and consistently stay close to the bottom line.

  • We’ll keep you posted. On more extensive projects, or if we’re doing several pieces for you at once, you’ll receive weekly updates of time spent. There will be no surprises, and you can adjust your tasks as needed.

  • We work with integrity. Our writers stand by their values and are (sometimes painfully) cautious with budgets. We track our time accurately and honestly.

In the end, charging an hourly rate makes the most sense for everyone involved. You’ll get to call the shots, have more control over how much you spend, and know you’re paying for exactly what you get.
